Portsmouth Counselling Service

How we work

Our counsellors are trained in different models of psychotherapeutic counselling, and we offer a Humanistic approach that puts the client at the heart of the counselling.  After an initial session of assessment, if you decide to come regularly, then we agree a contract with you that determines what you want to work on, how often you will come and perhaps for how long - though all our therapists review their work with you at least every six sessions.

After an initial assessment session with one of our senior counsellors, you will be matched with a counsellor for weekly sessions.

Sessions last 50 minutes and are usually held at the same time every week.  You will need to give us some notice if you are unable to attend, or the fee will still be payable (unless unavoidable).

You are in the driving seat and sessions go at your pace. You don't have to talk about anything unless you want to. What you talk about is confidential unless there are concerns for your (or others') safety.

You can end therapy at any time, though usually it is helpful to plan the sessions and leave therapy in a structured way.
